Seven Russian government officials and 17 companies will be the new targets of the latest round of sanctions from the Obama administration. The companies are believed to be linked to Russian President Vladmir Putin's inner circle. These are the third round of sanctions imposed by the Obama administration since March, attempting to pressure people and companies close to Putin to influence Russian involvement on the Crimean peninsula. The two most foremost Russians targeted in the new sanctions are Igor Sechin, the president and chairman of state-owned oil giant Rosneft, and Sergei Chemezov, the director-general of the government-owned high-tech export firm, Rostec. Sanctions will also include restrictions on high tech and microelectronics that reportedly have an influence on Russia's military capabilities--stopping short of wider sanctions that could deeply affect the European economy. Russia and Ukraine officials met two weeks ago on how to deescalate the situation in eastern Ukraine.
